Traditional
Music and Festivals
TThe
larger Northumbrian towns - Hexham, Rothbury, Durham, Morpeth and
Alnwick - have annual music festivals during the summer where local
music is to be heard in many venues and there are dancing displays
and often free music in local parks.
There
are also several regular traditional / folk clubs and sessions with
tunes and songs, often including Northumbrian pipes, at which you
can listen or join in
The
Irish Centre in Newcastle has music and dance weekly.
Concert
Halls and Theatres
The
Sage in Gateshead (mainly music) and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle
(mainly drama) have a varied programme of cultural events. There
are several other venues in Newcastle. Closer at hand, the Queen's
Hall in Hexham has a comprehensive programme of music and drama.
Countryside
The
choice is endless. Our roads probably have less traffic than you
will find anywhere else in England, Northumberland is the least
populated county in England with 62 people per square kilometre.
You can enjoy walking, cycling (both off road and on road), tennis
(nearby courts), golf, photography, horse riding, carriage-driving,
bird-watching, astronomy or visit the many wonderful gardens, restored
railways and Kielder Water.
Water
Swimming
in local indoor pool at Hexham or the heated outdoor pools at Haltwhistle,
fishing (licence needed) is nearby on the North Tyne. Canoeing with
Hexham Canoe Club or the many water sports at Kielder Lake &
Forest Park.
History
As
well as Hadrian’s Wall there are many other Roman sites and
museums, including ongoing archeological digs at Vindolanda to explore.
Discover the days of the Border Reivers and their Bastile Houses,
or enjoy some of the many fine castle and large houses in the county.
Art
There
are numerous well-known art galleries in Newcastle that are worth
a visit. In addition the area is renowned for the many artists and
artisans who live and exhibit locally, both in their own studios
as well as in many of the local arts & crafts shops. Many of
the local hotels and cafes also display work by local artists.
