Green Tourism

Please help us to be greener. Every little helps!!

It is our aim to do as much as possible to lessen our impact on the environment and to contribute to the local community and local economy.

Public transport is very limited: Although it is difficult to use the bus service from here it is not impossible, but have you considered using the Hadrian’s Wall Bus to explore along the Wall – timetables are on the sideboard and you can park your car in the lay-by on Brunton Bank?

Going to Newcastle, Gateshead Metro Centre or Carlisle is much easier by train from Hexham and there is no parking problem at Hexham Station.

Here are the telephone numbers of two local bicycle hire companies, one at Kielder and one in Hexham – you can use them for a great day out.

We minimize use of chemicals in the garden and actively encourage wildlife and an interest in plants by the “Things to do in the Garden” folders. We also have several bird boxes which usually have blue tits nesting in them. The Little Owl Box has been used by Great Tits for some years – so far no little owl has taken possession. Bats may be seen flying about at night but I’m not sure if they live in our bat box!

There are not many close local walks – one is to go right out of the gate, climb the first stile, walk through the field towards the railway line, after the gate turn right and you can walk along the railway line towards Barrasford, but be warned wear waterproof shoes! In the back of the red book you will find many circular walks for our area.

Reduce
Switch off unnecessary lights.
Turn off TV when not watching, and turn off LED.
Turn down radiators (they have thermostats).
Water. A bath uses 18 gallons, a shower uses 8 gallons.
Reduce the amount of time you spend in the car now you are here, we have some wonderful walks and attractions nearby, you will find literature about them in the folder.
Our outside lights are either low energy or automatic.
Washing is all done on the premises and whenever possible is hung in the fresh air to dry.
We use environmentally friendly cleaning products in the cottages and for doing the laundry, please do not throw away the washing up liquid bottles and replace them with eco-unfriendly types. We refill the containers to save on waste.
